THE UNSPOKEN

Poetry by Jennifer Brown Banks

Galvanized by fear
They live in
Gated communities
With perfectly manicured lawns,
Dressed in sapphire green
That wink at us
With flirtatious beauty,

Ironically,
With a welcoming appeal,
Yet guarded
From those of us,
Perceived as outsiders,
Or square peg
In-a-hole different,

Remaining
Exclusive,
Undiluted,
Monolithic,

Boasting
The unspoken,

“No coloreds allowed”

As history reminds us,
Trespassing
Carries
Penalties
