  • When I was in junior high school, my grandmother read my palm and told me I would make my living with words. She was right, but I doubt she had ever heard of anthropological linguistics. She herself had a few stories published in magazines. My mother wrote light verse and occasionally got paid for it. They both wrote novels - politely rejected by numerous publishers - so her prediction may have had less to do with the lines of my hands and more to do with the fact that I started to write stories when I was six. I have written stories and poems ever since, most of them rubbish and none of them published. Yet. It was only after I retired ten years ago that I got serious about writing. I have finally finished the first part of a projected trilogy, The Universal Game. It took me five years. I intend to publish it, and being an anthropologist am interested in understanding publishing processes and methods from the perspective of individuals more familiar with them than I am.
