- Jean Marie McNamara enlisted in the Army as an E-1 in 1993 and served for six years in the Illinois Army National Guard. As a combat medic, she has removed ticks from Privates and Generals, and the privates of some generally embarrassed soldiers. She received her commission through Officer Candidate School. Unfortunately, a head injury during a training accident ended Jean’s military and civilian careers. She has had multiple surgical procedures (laminectomy, craniotomy with decompression, and two procedures to reattach her left shoulder blade) to help repair the physical damage from her injury. Jean continues to struggle with the emotional toll of losing her independence and sense of self.
