- As a former high school English teacher, I’ve always appreciated the power of aptly chosen words to tell stories and capture our imaginations. Later when I became a nurse, I also learned the value of well-crafted writing to clarify technical or medical information. Now in my role as a community educator and moderator on an international nutritional website where written communication is required, I am working on presenting solid, research-based information in appealing ways. I am also focusing on developing and delivering dynamic research-based health presentations to colleges, libraries and community groups. My website, www.plantbasedjoan details the programs I’ve developed on Fake News: Nutrition Edition, The Blue Zones, and healthy "plant/slant" nutrition. As a former cruise lecturer, I’ve learned the importance of “Edu-tainment” and strive to present science-based concepts in ways that engage the minds of my readers and audience members. On a personal note, as an Midwest gal, I’ve been fortunate to travel the world, do a home exchange in Sydney, Australia, and even briefly take a job as a flight attendant (ending abruptly by 9/11). Life offers us so many opportunities and my goal is to use my communication abilities to share encouraging health messages so folks can take advantage of all those opportunities
